New Blog Series: A New Christian Theory of Ethics and Personhood with Ehrman and Goicoechea
Ehrman’s new book on Jesus’ innovative ethics is coming out later this month so I will be blogging about that, and I will supplement this with Goicoechea’s book on Christianity and personhood. Here’s a preview:

Goicoechea shows how the three traits of personhood–that all persons are equal in dignity, that each is unique, and that all persons are interpersonal–is rooted in that love which is agape. It is examined philosophically with Kierkegaard as he explains the logic of reconciling love, which can happen when I love the other, even my enemy, as more important than myself. The history of how humans became seen as persons and how this idea developed in the West is then examined through nine moments of history.
This will be a postmodern genealogical reading, trying to find where our modern notion of the person and ethics comes from. Of course, there were ethics and persons before Jesus, but we are looking for how he innovated.
